Ångström Brass presents
Memento Mori
Death. Judgment. Heaven. Hell.
Classically referred to as the Four Last Things, death, judgment, heaven, and hell are themes many Christian churches reflect on during the period between All Saints Day and the beginning of Advent. The Latin phrase “Memento Mori” (“be mindful of death”) has long been associated with items–especially skulls–kept in conspicuous places to serve as a constant reminder that our time on earth will one day come to an end. This concert is designed as an opportunity for meditation on the same theme, and is not associated with any particular denomination.
This program follows the classic “Lessons and Carols” format of alternating Biblical passages and musical selections. While incorporating scripture readings is new, pairing music and text has been a standard part of our post-pandemic performance practice. The music (all instrumental) has been chosen specifically to take advantage of resonant acoustic spaces, while also reflecting the themes of the readings.
The Program
This was the 2023 program, which may be subject to change in the future. There are many appropriate readings and musical selections. This was a 1-hour performance.
